Welcome to The Rough Concept, a weekly podcast where I, Melarie Odelusi, take you on a personal and inspiring journey through my artistic process, from the seed of an idea to the final masterpiece. Get ready for an honest and intimate exploration of my creative world, as I share my thoughts, feelings, and experiences with you.
Each week, we'll dive into a different aspect of the creative process, uncovering the magic behind those moments of inspiration, the challenges we face along the way, and how it all contributes to our personal growth. I'll open up about my own struggles with self-doubt, creative blocks, and finding that elusive balance between work and life.
But that's not all! You'll also get to hear from some of my favorite creatives in the community—authors, illustrators, painters, and designers—who have crossed my path and enriched my journey. Together, we'll share our stories, insights, and inspirations to help you embrace your unique creative process and discover the powerful connection between creativity and self-discovery.

Ep 15 : Cultivating Creativity Through Connection and Community with Marrica Evans Calahan
For as long as I can remember, I've had a solid support system of people that believed in me and supported me wherever I was in my career and life journey.
Let’s talk about the powerful roles that connection and community play in nurturing our creativity. I truly believe that it's how we find strength, motivation, and inspiration. Relationships and creative community brings this sense of belonging that can ignite our artistic passion and fuel our creative process.
This week I have Marrica Evans Calahan, photographer, content creator and my very own creative coworker and friend! I cannot wait for you to hear the story of her evolution, how she's created a lane of her own, and operates from of place of intention.
This week's gems:
Safe, Free, and Supported Spaces Nurture Creativity: A supportive environment can make the creative process less isolating and more magical. It helps one feel safe, free, and encourages artistic expression.
Community Connection Fosters Creativity and Mental Well-being: Continuous engagement and interaction with like-minded individuals can boost creative output, prevent mental stagnation, and offer steady inspiration.
Shared Experiences Foster Growth: Connecting with others on a similar path affords the opportunity to learn from their experiences and grow as an artist. The shared wisdom is a potent catalyst for personal development and success.
Creativity is Amplified Through Collaboration: Collaboration brings unique perspectives to the table and expands creative thinking. Working with others can result in output greater than what any single individual could achieve.
Community Acts as a Confidence Booster: A supportive community provides motivation, reassurance, and the confidence to tackle creative challenges. The sense of belonging within such a community can powerfully fuel the creative process and inspire personal growth.
Creative Prompt: How have your relationships and collaborations helped you develop as creative? How has being part of a community uplifted your creative spirit? I want you to create a piece that reflects your idea of 'community.' It can be a painting, a sketch, a song, a poem, or any medium that resonates with you. The key here is to allow yourself the freedom to truly dive deep into your own experience and interpret the concept in your own unique way.
